What is Somatic Release?

Somatic Release vinyasa is a mix of our standard vinyasa yoga class, combined with a mind-body technique that involves shaking, dance, shrugging, breath-work, and primal movements that relieve pain and tension stored in the body. This practice ebbs and flows from high energy to a grounded slow pace to retrain the nervous system and establish emotional regulation.

Why should I practice Somatic Release?

Trauma and tension are stored in the body in specific holding patterns that can result in tension headaches, migraines, fatigue, and more debilitating illness when left unaddressed. When the body experiences physical or mental trauma, a freeze response can take place.

When should I practice Somatic Release?

Somatic release is a high-energy practice. It should be practiced intentionally. It can be used as an explorative practice, to investigate and notice our typical tension patterns - or to specifically release mental blocks.

What are the benefits?

Unlike talk therapy, Somatic Release focuses on the body as the foundation, not the mind. During or after trauma, the nervous system may freeze - stress hormones continuously release, and the immune system weakens. When negative emotion is stored in the body, things like chronic pain, grief, anxiety, and depression can emerge under the constant stress. The goal of Somatic Release is to approach the body curiously, allow the emotions to rise to the surface, and physically move them out of the body. The same can apply for physical injury and tension holding patterns. The body is an organism that relies on patterns. When we break the cycle of pattern, the brain and body can reconnect to create new pathways.
